How Bad of An Idea is This?

Someone’s selling a ‘53 Chevy 210 sedan - not the most desirable year or model, but I’ve always liked the look of the ‘53 and ‘54 models, and the 2-speed Powerglide and Blue Flame straight six is supposed to be a pretty durable powertrain.

Price seems decent, but I really don’t have a great frame of reference on that, given the wide gulf in values between 4-doors and 2-doors. Also, some semi- worrying things - much of the chrome on the front has been painted over (maybe the result of a cheap paint job over rust or something) , and that stuff can be expensive to replace (don’t think they make repro pieces for all of it), hubcaps are from the early ‘60s, missing horn ring, signs of rust on the dash, etc.

Oh, and I really don’t have space, exactly. Maybe I could cram one more in the drive, otherwise something’s going in the street. A Beetle or something, I could park easily, but this is a large( ish) family sedan.

I really like the way these look, but they aren’t particularly valuable . Honestly the price seems pretty high for a not-mint 4-door.  Take that with a grain of salt, as I have not done any classic car shopping in years, so I don’t exactly have my finger on the pulse.

I figure there’s at least some room for negotiation, maybe settle around $5500, but really don’t know if that’s a good spot. There’s probably $500 or more just in missing/ruined chrome, let alone whatever rust might be lurking, and the loose headliner, etc.

My gut is $4000-4500 is the right price for this.  But again, I’m not exactly current in the market.

Oh, It would be like owning a 1950's truck. Stuff will wear out and you will have to fix it. It will be hot as hell in the summer and won’t reliably start at colder than 15 degrees. It won’t turn or stop, or be happy on the interstate but if that is not a problem for you, that’s great!

In a coincidence, there’s one for sale near me. The engine cleans up nicely.

I’m going to echo the ~$4500 value. It’s rough, definitely a project.  The paint makes my skin crawl.

It’s going to be a ton of work. If it’s what you want, do it...but if you can’t commit 100%, you’re probably better off holding onto the cash and getting something that really lights your heart on fire.

I don’t know these cars so I have no idea on price but there is a good chance the bumpers could be stripped and re-chromed. Everything visible looks good so how bad of an idea it is probably depends on how it looks underneath.

Blue flame and a powerglide, it’s basically a Corvette! Lol

Looks like a nice cruiser. I love the 2 tone interior.

Well, there’s only about 23 miles of Interstate in my whole state, and the closest on-ramp to it is about 50 miles from me, and our coldest month maybe hits 25 degrees at the absolute  lowest, so that mitigates a few things.

Yeah, something about the ad tells me this might be an IknowhatIhave type of seller, $1500-$2000 down is probably a stretch. Paint looks like a $99.95 Earl Sheib special with quite a bit of age on it, or maybe done at home with a rattle can.

Seems like a good deal for a driver, but don't buy it thinking you'll ever turn a profit. Also on the chrome this was the style in the 90's all that stuff can be rechromed since it was actual metal but that is expensive these days.

I suspect sourcing better replacements would be cheaper than rechroming what’s on it. I never buy used cars, regardless of how old, with the expectation of a profit. They’re not investments, anymore than a house is (unless you buy in a really booming/in demand area, or buy a really hot/desirable car, best you can hope for is maybe keep pace with inflation ).

That’s a good thought process but I only buy homes and used cars I think I can make money on. If it is a used daily I factor in my use to make up for any loss  on our two main cars but not on our extra cars.

Cars like this are fun for their personality, and the simple engines are easy to work on and last forever if well- maintained. If you can get past the painted chrome, I say go for it! “Ordinary” cars of that era don’t get nearly enough attention, and I’d love to see more posts about cars like this.

Well then, this may be the car for you!

Come to think of it, one of my fraternity brothers had a black 50's 210 like this back in the 1970's. His nickname was the dude. But he wasn’t the stoner type. He was a big Iowa Iowa farm boy. I think he liked it because he could fit and drive it with his cowboy hat on.

Take it for a ride. Don’t worry about the price. Instead t ake a hard look at the condition and whether the things needing work have been taken care of. If it makes you smile, go for it!

I’m sure these were the bottom of the barrel, buy here/pay here used cars in the ‘70s, just like all the ‘80s and ‘90s beaters in the lot when I was in college. I do remember one of the officers in my dad’s department when I was a kid was 6ft 5 and pretty big in other dimensions, and he always drove cheap ‘50s and ‘60s beaters - this would have been late 1980s - because he said he couldn’t fit comfortably in anything new. The one I remember most was a ‘61 Cadillac of some sort that was probably as much Bondo as steel, but it still looked fantastic parked next to the Tempos and Horizons everyone else had at the time.

1. In the future if you need to quit drinking do not go down to your local bar and ask your drinking buddies and your favorite bar tender if you should quit drinking. They will just laugh and buy you a drink.

2. I think you should buy it. The car looks awesome. I’ll bet I can find you some fresh chrome trim and a horn ring.

that was a period when the engines were being upgraded to full pressure lubrication, if that is one that still has “dipper” rods, like a lawnmower engine, they were known to burn up the big end bearings at sustained highway speeds, just did a search and it looks pretty much like the 53's still had the old no pressurized big end bearing setup if that is the stock engine. it’s fine for cruising tho
